Henry VII and Elizabeth of York were devastated at the death of their eldest son and heir, Prince Arthur, in 1502. Henry in particular not only grieved for his son but for what he felt was the weakening of his dynasty. Elizabeth comforted him and told him they still had a son and two daughters, and were young enough to have more children. She became pregnant for the seventh time and entered into her confinement in the early months of 1503. It was a difficult birth and the ladies who attended her did fear for her and the child’s life. Henry despaired that he was going to lose his wife and would not be consoled. Elizabeth, somewhat miraculously to those who were near her, survived and gave birth to a healthy daughter. Henry forgot the feelings of a king and could not even be slightly disappointed that he had another daughter; all that mattered was the well-being of both. The child was named Katherine, and she was doted on by her parents all the more for being the child of their grief. (x)
